Legionella bacteria confirmed at Dundee hotel
Legionella bacteria has been confirmed in samples taken from the leisure club at Dundee's Landmark Hotel, following a health scare at the property in March.
NHS Tayside Health Protection Team and environmental health officers from Dundee City Council were called in after a guest fell ill with Legionnaires' disease. The health authority is continuing to examine a "large number" of people reporting flu-like symptoms, although it is now thought that Pontiac fever is the "likely" cause.
Dr Finn Romanes, NHS Tayside consultant in public health medicine, said: "It is now very likely that, in a number of cases, this illness could be caused by a condition called Pontiac fever." The single confirmed case of Legionnaires' disease is currently being treated at the city's Ninewells Hospital. The hotel's leisure club shut on 17 March following the scare.
