Leisure centre plans for Nottingham
Gedling Borough Council has unveiled plans to replace one of its Nottingham leisure centres as part of a £10m revamp of Arnold Town Centre.
The council plans to use £950,000 pledged by the government to further its plans, which include the relocation of the current leisure centre and developing the site as a shopping centre.
The site for the new leisure centre is still to be confirmed, but the council's preferred site is the King George V Recreation Ground in Arnold, which will require permission from the Charity Commission.
So far the only details released about the new centre are that it would potentially use solar power or geothermal heating.
However, the BBC reported that the plans may mean that Redhill and Calverton leisure centres and Ponds Hill Lane centre will have to shut in order to fund the project, but this has not been confirmed by the council as the plans are still in the early stages.
Wendy Golland, portfolio holder for leisure and wellbeing, said: "Some of our leisure centres are dated in their image and appearance and planned maintenance costs are expected to rise significantly.
"If we can relocate Arnold Leisure Centre from its current position, not only will we have a brand new state of the art leisure centre for the people of the borough but crucially, we can provide our residents with a facility that is better value for money and we will free up the existing site for redevelopment."
