Bjarke Ingels unveils Europa City masterplan

Bjarke Ingels, director of architecture practice BIG, has revealed his masterplan for France's Europa City – set to be one of the largest leisure developments in Europe over the next five years.

In a video, Ingels talks the viewer through the structure of the massive leisure destination. Like nearby Paris, the project will be split into quarters – each with a different form and function – all based around a central plaza.

The specific areas of Europa City outlined so far include:

• The ‘pop’ area – consisting of a theme park • The ‘zen’ area – which will have an urban farm

• The ‘sun’ area – providing a water park and hotel • The ‘xtrm’ area – to include a snow park and adventure park

• The ‘hype’ zone – the northern most section of the park will have department stores, an exhibition hall and cultural zones, all linking to the city’s main transport hub • The ‘showbiz’ area – featuring theatres and space for restaurants

So far, two videos have been released offering people the chance to see what the project will look like. The developer behind the project, Alliages, will begin constructing Europa City, just 16km (10m) away from Paris, in 2017. The park is planned to open in 2020.

The hotly-anticipated project features a number of key players and was one of the big topics of discussion among attendees at the recent IAAPA Expo in Orlando, Florida.

London-based Leisure Development Partners (LDP) has been working on Europa City for almost two years, helping define the entertainment programme and providing feasibility analysis, as well as identifying potential operators and partners.

"Europa City is perhaps the largest mixed-use leisure, retail and entertainment project currently planned in Europe, with an exciting mix of attractions and accommodation," LDP senior partner and co-founder Michael Collins told Attractions Management.

"The project team recognises the increasing importance of leisure and entertainment as anchors for retail and mixed-use schemes, with plans for cutting edge attraction anchors, capable of driving visitors to the project from outside of the typical retail catchments delivering strong image, employment and economic impacts."
