John Henry, the American owner of Liverpool Football Club, is likely to cast aside plans drawn up by former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett and instead pursue the original, nine-year-old plans for a new stadium at Stanley Park.

The original plans, drawn up by architects AFL in 2002, were abandoned by Hicks and Gillett in favour of "futuristic" plans commissioned from Dallas-based architects HKS.

The club already has planning permission for the AFL plans, which would see the creation of a 60,000-seater "New Anfield" stadium at Grade II-listed Stanley Park.

It is believed that Henry is currently looking for funding for the £300m project, with a lucrative stadium naming rights package being one of the key initiatives.
