Livingstone backs Wembley for National Stadium
London mayor Ken Livingstone has given the strongest indication yet of his position on the issue of the national stadium.
Speaking in the Evening Standard yesterday, Livingstone clearly outlined his support for the locating of the new stadium on the Wembley site saying: Wembley is the most economically viable, the most accessible and the best option for the new national football stadium.
Livingstone highlighted the importance of Wembley as a name for corporate sponsorship, and suggested that Wembley is already ideally linked to every regional centre of the UK, and to Europe. Livingstone added that not locating at Wembley would have very serious consequences and would mean losing one of the biggest brand names in sport.
The government-ordered review into the national stadium, led by Patrick Carter, is due to report back within the next few weeks.
