Loch Fyne, the seafood restaurant chain, has released a report on sustainable fishing and is calling on fellow operators to be more responsible.

The company, which is in its 10th anniversary year, teamed with the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation and the Marine Stewardship Council to produce the report – called Turning the Tide on Sustainability – to put for forward their views on how the fishing industry can better ensure its long term sustainability.

Among key actions highlighted in the report included the need for better enforcement of policy by governments; innovative solutions to ensure that aquaculture (fish farming) is sustainably and economically viable and consumer action in choosing sustainable fish.

Mark Derry, managing director of Loch Fyne, said: “Farmed fish can be sustainable and critics must accept that aquaculture is here to stay. However, there is no excuse for putting short term profit before sustainability. In some species, wild fish are a scarce resource, which means we need to look to aquaculture.

“Farmed fish, when done properly, is a real improvement to overfishing, but the industry needs to continue to invest in finding solutions that will improve ethical and environmental standards.”

Loch Fyne Restaurants was bought by Greene King in August last year for £68m. Details: www.lochfyne.com
