London market voted capital’s best day out
Borough Market, held every Friday and Saturday beneath the railway viaduct into London Bridge station, has been named the winner in a poll of "Totally London" experiences voted for by the public.
The results of the vote were announced at this year’s London Tourism Awards – organised by tourist body Visit London – at Claridge’s hotel. They saw Borough Market the winner on 43.2 per cent, followed by Hyde Park, South Bank, Covent Garden, the London Transport museum, Camden Town, the Museum of London, the Geffrye Museum, the William Morris Gallery and, on 1 per cent, Postmans Park.
Other poll winners, in a vote by tourism industry professionals, included a cleaner at Somerset House, who won the World Class Welcome award.
Elsewhere, the Natural History Museum and its newly opened Darwin Centre won the award for Best Large Attraction, Apsley House was named Best Small Attraction, Best Sightseeing tour was City Cruises and The London Eye was said to have the Best Tourism Website.
The National Portrait Gallery won the "Tourism for All" accolade, to acknowledge its commitment to the needs of its disabled visitors
In the hospitality sector, the Best Large Hotel was The Landmark, Marylebone, Best Small Hotel the Capital in Knightsbridge and the Best Bed and Breakfast the Windermere Hotel in Victoria. Details: www.visitlondon.com
