London pledges £20m for 2012 Olympics
The London 2012 bid team has revealed three Olympic charters detailing £20m worth of commitments to athletes, sports federations and National Olympic Committees.
Lord Coe, the leader of the bid, announced the pledges at the SportAccord summit in Berlin on 18 April in a move which is widely seen to be stepping up the campaign for the 2012 Games to be held in London.
Charter highlights include giving all 15,000 athletes and team members free, open-ended economy class return flights to London at a cost of more than £10m and around £53 (US$100) worth of free phone calls each during the Olympics.
Olympic officials and competitors would also be offered discount cards allowing up to 50 per cent reduction at London hotels, restaurants and shops.
London would also provide all countries with £30,000 towards the cost of accommodation if they wished to use designated camps in Britain to train for the Games.
“We have long considered how to deliver the best experience for everyone who makes the Games the greatest show on earth,” said Coe. “These charters contain commitments which make a London Games the best.” Details: www.london2012.org
