'Major new addition' for Brown University complex
A "major new addition" to Brown University's athletic complex at in Rhode Island, US, is due to be completed on the site of the former Smith Swim Center in March 2012.
Construction work started on the US$46m (£28.8m, EUR33.4m) project in May 2010, with new facilities to include the10,000sq ft (929sq m)multi-use Nelson Fitness Center.
The Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center is to incorporate a 56m swimming pool, 3m diving and spectator seating for 800 people. The pool will also feature moveable booms.
Elsewhere, new facilities will also include the 12,000sq ft (1,115sq m) David J Zucconi '55 Varsity Strength and Conditioning Centre and the landscaped Ittleson Quadrangle.
The scheme, which has been drawn up by Robert AM Stern Architects, also boast a total of three exercise studios; changing areas; and offices for coaches and administrative staff.
Brown University director of athletics Michael Goldberger said: "This magnificent new facility will give Brown's varsity swimming, diving and water polo teams one of the league's best venues for competition and training.
"The health and fitness centre and the new athletics quadrangle will make the athletic complex an important part of campus life for the entire Brown community."
