Major new sports complex for Singapore
Singapore Sports Hub - a major new sports, entertainment and lifestyle complex in Kallang - is scheduled to be completed in 2014 in a bid to help develop the country's sport sector.
Arup and DP Architects have been involved with the design of the project, which is being led by SportsHub Pte Ltd (SHPL) - a company comprising four equity partners. A groundbreaking ceremony took place in September last year, which marked the start of the SG$1.33bn (£674m, EUR763m, US$1.1bn) development of the new Singapore Sports Hub.
At the centre of the 35-hectare (86.5-acre) site will be a 55,000-capacity National Stadium - complete with retractable roof and comfort cooling for spectators. Facilities will include a 3,000-capacity indoor Aquatic Centre with leisure provision and the capability to expand to 6,000 for major international-standard events.
A 3,000-capacity multi-purpose indoor arena; a water sports centre; and a Sports Information and Resource Centre with museum and exhibition centre will also feature at the site. The scheme is one of the country's largest Public-Private-Partnership schemes, entailing a 25-year design, build, finance and operating contract. It will be sited next to Marina Bay.
