A major waterfront project is to revitalise the foreshore in Port Hedland, Australia, following a AU$152m (US$160m, EUR130m, £102m) commitment from state and town authorities.

Western Australia Government is working with the Town of Port Hedland on the Spoilbank Marina Precinct scheme, which will include a new marina with up to 250 boat pens.

The development - part of the Pilbara Cities initiative to revitalise Port Hedland into a city of 50,000 people - will also include a hotel, a mixed-use complex and public recreation space.

State support worth AU$112m (US$118m, EUR96m, £75m) has been provided towards the creation of the Spoilbank Marina Precinct - seen as a "welcome addition to the landscape".

Western Australia premier Colin Barnett said: "Port Hedland's underutilised foreshore will become a landmark attraction providing residents and visitors the opportunity to take advantage of the region's outdoor lifestyle."

Regional development and lands minister Brendon Grylls added: "We expect the development to act as a catalyst for further private sector investment in the broader Port Hedland foreshore area."

Work is expected to start on the detailed design of the project later this year, with completion scheduled for 2016-17.
