Man City owner tops football rich list

Roman Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, has been replaced at the top of British football's rich list by the new owner of Manchester City Football Club, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

According to the sixth annual list of the domestic game's 100 richest figures, published by FourFourTwo magazine, the Russian billionaire has fallen to third in the list, with Indian businessman Lakshmi Mittal in second following his investment in Queens Park Rangers Football Club. Abramovich has reportedly lost £3bn during the recession, which has resulted in his fortune being slashed to £7bn – less than half the estimated wealth of Sheikh Mansour (£15bn).

While three foreign investors occupy the top three places of the FourFourTwo Football Rich List, there are 64 Brits included in this year's survey, with the highest placed being Joe Lewis of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, who sits fourth with a fortune worth £2.5bn. The magazine's editor-in-chief, Hugh Sleight, said: "Judging by this list, football is the last remaining financial bubble. The combined worth of our Top 100 is now £61bn, compared with £41.7bn last year and £20.45bn in the first-ever Football Rich List in 2003.

"But the landscape has changed dramatically because of the recession. As [Arsenal manager] Arsene Wenger rightly pointed out, football will suffer just like any other industry. In 12 months time, this list could look very different."
