Manchester fire station venture
Developer Argent and the Piccadilly Partnership – an alliance between the Manchester City Council, the private sector and other public sector agencies – plan to redevelop the grade II-listed, derelict London Road fire station in Manchester into a mixed-use scheme.
The City Council’s executive committee endorsed the application for a music and leisure complex in February.
The Partnership plans to construct a transparent roof over the fire station’s inner courtyard and convert the three-storey building into music and event venue, a music academy and archive, recording studios, a private members’ club, a music market and a 100-bed acoustically insulated boutique hotel.
The developers must now seek cooperation from the fire station’s owner, Alex Langsam, before construction can begin.
However, Brittania Hotels – owned by Langsam – has also shown an active interest in developing the fire station. The group submitted a planning application for a hotel, new Brittania HQ and a fire station museum, but it did not contain sufficient information for council registration.
The council hopes that the Partnership’s proposals will encourage Langsam to either collaborate or bring forward his own alternative proposals. Details: www.manchester.gov.uk
