Marine Aquarium plans submarine trips for visitors
The Plymouth-based National Marine Aquarium has revealed plans to operate a six-man research and tourist submarine.
The aquarium, which was also behind the recent Scylla Reef project, has been designing and developing the craft at Marlin Submarines in Plymouth for the past three years.
The sub, called Alicia after the owner’s daughter, weighs just over 18 tonnes and will be capable of diving to 305m.
It should be available to the public from around mid-July 2004.
Chief executive of the aquarium, Michael Leece, said: “The submarine is a fantastic opportunity for the aquarium – we aim to engage people with the oceans and the submarine provides both scientific and leisure opportunities.
“What better way is there for non-divers to see the wonders of the sea right in front of them?” Details: www.national-aquarium.co.uk
