Maritime Museum reshuffles galleries
Falmouth Maritime Museum in Cornwall will be displaying a hat trick of Olympic gold winning boats for the first time as part of its gallery reorganisation.
The flotilla includes The Finn, which Ben Ainslie sailed to victory in Beijing 2008 and Athens 2004, Laser from the Sydney 2000 Games and Rodney Pattisson's Superdocious, which helped win him gold in Mexico City in 1968. The museum director, Jonathan Griffin, said: "The reorganisation at the museum has given the team a fantastic opportunity to vary our displays, bringing together boats which have not been displayed together before, such as our Olympic winners.
"We're also taking some of our most special boats that have been somewhat hidden away and displaying them where people can get close enough to touch and really experience their maritime heritage." Some of the boats haven't been on show for over five years, including the 1866 Waterlily which is one of the earliest steam launches still in existence.
As part of the reorganisation, which is expected to be completed by February, the Set Sail gallery will be used to house the Under the Sea exhibit, and the original content will be moved to a temporary residence, called The Hold.
