California's Great America in Santa Clara has debuted its world-first 4D holographic experience based on the popular Mass Effect videogame series.

Teaming up with Electronic Arts (EA) and Bioware on the project, the dynamic new attraction at Great America is an immersive experience, combining real-life actors with strong theming, motion seating, sound technology and other 4D experiences.

Opened in the newly-renovated Action Theatre, the attraction sends guests through space to a distant planet where they face off against Mass Effect's signature adversaries in a battle for the universe. BioWare and EA have been actively involved in the project, helping to produce its CGI visuals.

“Teaming with a world-wide gaming leader like EA will enable us to build an incredible user experience for Great America guests,” said California’s Great America vice president and general manager Raul Rehnborg. “This combination of technology and creative video game content is sure to usher in a new wave of entertainment innovation at amusement parks.”

The opening was originally due to coincide with the 2016 launch of Mass Effect 4, though the game is now expected in early 2017.

“EA and BioWare are thrilled to partner with Great America and see one of our most iconic games turned into an exciting high-tech attraction,” said Patrick O’Brien, vice president of Entertainment and Licensing, EA.

“Having a partner who shares our commitment to thrilling our fans is extremely important to us and we look forward to building an attraction that will appeal to the Mass Effect fan-base and introduce it to many more.”
