Max Whitlock, Amy Tinkler and Bryony Page are among the athletes invited to compete at the World Cup of gymnastics, which will take place at London’s O2 Arena next year.

The event has been moved from Glasgow to the larger arena by the sport’s governing body, British Gymnastics, and the Barry Hearn-owned Matchroom Sport to capitalise on the interest elite gymnastics has experienced since Team GB’s stellar Rio 2016 Olympic Games campaign.

Great Britain’s team achieved its upper medal target of five set by UK Sport, with Whitlock winning two gold medals and Page achieving an unexpected silver.

The ‘all-round competition’ will occur on 8 April 2017 and will be broadcast on Sky Sports. Men will compete over six events – floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar – while the women will take on four – vault, uneven bars, beam and floor.

Jane Allen, chief executive of British Gymnastics, said the hosting the event was “testament to the huge success of our sport” and that the national governing body was going from “strength to strength”.

“The World Cup of Gymnastics is a fantastic competition with some of the world’s best gymnasts in action,” she added. “Having been staged superbly in Glasgow for many years in front of sold-out crowds this is a chance for even more new fans to witness our sport.”
