Mecanoo and Metaform to design Luxembourg’s first velodrome
The first velodrome in Luxembourg will be designed by architectural firms Mecanoo and Metaform, who recently were awarded the commission after winning a competition launched by the country’s Ministry of Sport.
The new building, which – in addition to a 1,000-person capacity velodrome – will include a swimming pool, multi-sports hall, and dining facilities, will be built in the spa town of Mondorf-les-Bains.
Visually and structurally designed to merge with the surrounding landscape, the velodrome itself will be half-submerged, covered by what Mecanoo has called a “green carpet” of foliage.
The entire complex, estimated to cost €65m, will span 24,500 square metres.
Construction on the new leisure venue is expected to be completed in 2023.
