The ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, HH Sheikh Dr Sultan Mohammed Al Qasimi, launched the Mleiha Development Project this month which has been described as one of the largest ecotourism developments in the Gulf region.

Located some 90 minutes’ drive from Sharjah City, the 25,000 hectare (61,776 acre) project aims to boost the tourist, environmental and economic position of the area and will be developed in two phases. The first phase will see the creation of a visitors centre located close to the Umm Al Nar Historical Tomb. It will provide information about the heritage and history of the region in addition to cafes and lounges for visitors. This phase will also see wildlife rehabilitated to the area, while historical sites will be organised and guided tours arranged. The much larger second phase will see the construction of hotels, resorts, lodges, cafes and restaurants.

The project is a joint venture between the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) and Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA). The Sheikh added that Sharjah would soon announce more projects that would boost the Emirate’s tourist, environmental and economic position and ensure greater welfare and prosperity for its people.

A spokesman from Shurooq said no further details were available for phase two, as these would only be announced once phase one was completed next year.
