Merthyr Tydfil launches World Heritage bid
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council (MTCBC) has launched its bid for the Cyfarthfa Heritage Area to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Among the historically significant sites included within the area is one of the world's first iron railway bridges built in 1793; the site of the first railway tunnel built by Richard Trevithick and the Taff Vale Railway. MTCBC councillor and Merthyr Tydfil Heritage Champion Derek Games said: "It is vitally important we recall Merthyr Tydfil in the 1800's when it was described as the iron capital of the world, with its four iron and steel works.
"The original Cyfarthfa Furnace, once restored has the potential to attract visitors from around the world. World Heritage status will give worldwide recognition to the heritage of Merthyr Tydfil."
