Middlesbrough tree planting scheme launched
More than 8,000 trees and approximately 1,500 shrubs are to be planted in Middlesbrough as part of a project to create a new area of woodland at Newham Grange Leisure Farm.
The planting scheme will cover an area of more than 2.4 hectares (5.9 acres), creating a public walkway linking the existing trails along the becks, or small streams, at either side of the Leisure Farm. A mix of trees including ash, oak and field maple will be planted, following recommendations made by a chartered forester designed to improve the local ecology and to encourage wildlife in the area.
Paul Thompson, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for streetscene services, said: "Middlesbrough is a heavily built-up borough, which means the scope for new tree planting is relatively rare. "However, when those opportunities do arise, we will seize them with both hands as this project abundantly demonstrates. This new tree belt will be a fantastic new addition to the area, enhancing it for the future and ensuring the area is a popular venue for families and walkers."
