Mintel report shows energy and stimulant drink growth
A Mintel report into the energy and stimulant drinks market has revealed that the market has increased by 366 per cent since 1996. The report indicates that energy drinks, such as Lucozade, and stimulants, such as Red Bull, are pushing the £615m market at a faster rate than the cola category. Stimulants are proving the biggest growth market of any drink - with a 5,588 per cent increase in sales between 1996 and 2000, while energy drinks maintain consistent progress. Recent scares in Sweden, where an energy drink was implicate d in two deaths, as well as the general slow down of the market may well show growth to continue at a slower rate, the report concludes. Simon Howitt, consumer goods consultant said that progress should continue barring future consumer concerns: It is difficult to see what impact, if any, that the Swedish scare may have on the UK market. Assuming there are no other scares associated with this market, Mintel forecasts healthy year-on-year growth over the next five years.
