Divers working on the bed of the Solent believe they have found more remains of the Tudor warship, Mary Rose.

The discovery – a 5m piece of timber – is thought to be part of the front stem of the vessel’s keel and has led researchers to believe that large sections of its bow and forecastle could still be found.

If this were to be the case, a complete cross section of the ship – which sank in 1545 – will have been recovered. A large section of the ship’s hull was raised in 1982 and is on display in Portsmouth Dockyard.

The exploration of the wreck site was brought about by Ministry of Defence plans to deepen the channels into Portsmouth Naval Base, the Mary Rose being in the way of possible dredging work. Details: www.maryrose.org
