Architect and masterplanner Sir Terry Farrell has revealed his ‘aspirational vision’ for the development of Thames Gateway in London.

The multi-billion pound development, which will be presented to the government in August, includes a new, purpose-built national park, a river crossing and new towns developed as mixed-use communities and built on man-made islands on the Thames.

According to Farrell, the development could become Britain’s first ‘truly sustainable eco-region’.

The plans also include a 5.6mile river crossing between Sheerness in Kent and Shoeburyness in Essex.

The park and islands are being presented as ways of coping with future climate issues. Modern methods to harness tidal wave power and bio-crops would be utilised for energy creation in both the park and on the islands.

Supporters of the scheme include Lord Richard Rogers and the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, who said Thames Gateway could mean that “London has its own Lake District”.

Earlier this year, Farrell formed a consortium with HBOS, Experian, Battle McCarthy, Scott Wilson, the Future Foundation and EC Harris. Funding and support is now being sought from both the public and the private sectors to move the project forward. Details: www.terryfarrell.co.uk
