A new museum exploring the world of science fiction is being planned for

Washington DC, US, expected to open at some point in 2017.

The Museum of Science Fiction will cover a broad sampling of science fiction across literature, television, film, music, video games and art.

The museum is going through a three-stage construction process, with the facility being introduced to interested parties through an online medium, with a 3,000sq ft (279sq m) preview museum being created before the final facility is put together.

By creating a preview structure, the museum’s creators believe that they will be able to encourage visitors to get involved early in the development process, allowing flexibility to adjust plans and assure a better visitor experience in the full-scale facility.

As well as central exhibition space to help educate the public on the field of science fiction, the museum will also feature seven galleries to pursue its objective of broadening people’s horizons on the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The museum is to be funded largely by corporate and private donors, though the facility also expects to receive some form of financial fillip from the region’s local authorities.

Greg Viggiano, the executive director of the project, has also setup a fundraising scheme through Indiegogo to try and garner further support for the Museum of Science Fiction.

Several collectors have already approached the museum to offer potential collections to display, with exhibits including the likes of the Enterprise E used in the Star Trek: Insurrection film, as well as the Amargosa Observatory and Deep Space 9 ships featured in the brand’s earlier science fiction offerings.
