Museums must be modernised
The Association of Independent Museums says a major museum modernisation programme is urged by a new report on the state of the UK's museums and galleries, jointly commissioned by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Resource.
UK Museums Needs Assessment draws together findings of a range of research and analysis undertaken over several years.
AIM chair, Sam Mullins says: 'The report confirms that despite the huge investment in our sector by the Heritage Lottery Fund, much remains to be done to ensure the sustainability of the museum sector, whether unfounded or under-funded.'
Among museums' needs highlighted are museums' physical infrastructure - poor condition of historic sites; insufficient storage space with 60 per cent of museum stores severely overcrowded; skills shortages and training needs; increased resources needed to deliver education projects; human resources issues, including pay and sharing best practice and the need to develop marketing, market research and promotional skills.
