Museums to offer adult learning activities
Museums and galleries across the UK are set to offer adult learning activities after the government announced plans to invest £210m in the scheme over the next two years.
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) is become the latest organisation to sign up to The Learning Revolution, led by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). It is hoped that the scheme, which aims to open up public spaces to offer a range of accessible and affordable activities, will encourage more adults to stay active through informal learning.
According to new BIS research, more than a quarter of people who work in the hospitality, tourism and leisure sectors have not learned a new hobby or activity. Kevin Brennan, minister for further education and skills, said: "Craft classes, knitting circles and family history projects are all looking for places to meet, so it's good to see more organisations providing space for them to do this. But there's so much more that can be done.
"Offices, libraries, pubs and galleries could all provide free or low cost meeting places either occasionally or on a regular basis. We want to see even more spaces opened up to help create an 'open space' movement that can benefit everyone."
