Médiacité planned for Li'ge
A mixed use project on the site of a former steelworks and rolling mill in Li'ge, Belgium has been granted planning permission.
The project, which has been awaiting approval for five years, consists of a EUR 130m retail and leisure complex which includes a multi-screen UCG cinema, an SAS Radisson hotel plus television and production studios.
Belgian developers Wilhelm & Co are expecting work on the 60,000sq m scheme to start by October 2002.
'Li'ge is an old industrial city, and this is the first dramatic new project to happen here,' said managing director of Wilhelm & Co, Peter Wilhelm. 'It will be a symbol of Li'ge becoming an international destination, and signify the renewal of the economy, and the turn around of the city.'
Architects RTKL have designed the scheme around a central plaza, which it is hoped will become the selling point of the development. Completion of Médiacité is expected in September 2004.
