NEC Group unveils MGM Mirage casino partnership
Birmingham has unveiled its bid to win the UK’s first supercasino licence with the news that the NEC Group has chosen Las Vegas-based casino operator MGM Mirage as its partner to develop a multi-million pound regional casino complex.
The proposed scheme includes 300,000sq ft (28,000sq m) of leisure space featuring a casino, a range of dining options, a number of ‘high-energy’ entertainment facilities and potentially a 300-room, four-star hotel.
Located adjacent to the existing Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (NEC) – which currently welcomes four million visitors per year – the new development would be called MGM Grand at the NEC.
The NEC Group is owned by the City of Birmingham, so revenues generated from the scheme would be used to fund regeneration schemes in Birmingham, Solihull and the West Midlands.
It is estimated that, were the project to successfully gain a regional casino licence, it could be worth more than £600m to the region in the first 10 years alone.
Andrew Morris, chief executive of the NEC Group, said that money could be used to finance schemes like the regeneration of Wheels Adventure Park and a city stadium.
He added that the company is also working with Birmingham International Airport to develop future community transport links to the airport and exhibition centre to ensure people living in the deprived wards in north Solihull and east Birmingham could have access to the 3,000 new jobs created by the development.
“The NEC Group is owned by this community and we felt it important to ensure that the income earned from the complex is used to benefit the community,” he said.
“We call upon Birmingham City Council to back this project in the best interests of the people, the city and the region.”
Lloyd Nathan, managing director Europe for MGM Mirage, said: “This joint proposal anticipates creating a showpiece architectural statement that will redefine the gaming experience for the West Midlands and the UK.”
