Namibia backs tourism football scheme
The Namibian Tourist Board is backing a new initiative to encourage holidaymakers to interact with African communities through football in the lead up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Footballs for Fun is an independent charity set up to sell specially-designed footballs to tour operators who will distribute them to holidaymakers visiting countries in southern Africa.
The footballs will then be handed out to children in schools, hospitals and townships.
The initiative, which began this week, will initially run for three years.
Shareen Thude, strategic executive for marketing for Namibia Tourist Board, said: “We are really excited to be part of this initiative.
“Football is a universally enjoyed sport and so this campaign will enable visitors to interact with local children and families at the same level, thus showing their appreciation of Namibian culture and providing an in depth cultural experience.”
