Nearly the end of the road for the Routemaster
Transport for London has announced that its Routemaster bus fleet is to be removed from most of the routes it currently serves and restricted to those serving tourist attractions.
Popular with visitors to the capital as the archetypal red double-decker London bus and for its hop on and off open platform, the Routemaster was introduced in the 1950s and originally designed to last 17 years.
The advantage in speed they enjoyed over other types by having conductors to collect fares will be removed by the introduction in Central London later this year of 300 new ticket machines at bus stops. Details: www.londontransport.co.uk/tfl
