Neil Kinnock to chair National Theatre?
The Sunday Times , has reported that former Labour leader, Neil Kinnock, could become chairman of the National Theatre when his role as European commissioner (EC) ends next year.
Senior government figures have reportedly put forward Kinnock’s name in an informal meeting with current members of the theatre’s board, who are co-responsible for choosing the chair, in consultation with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Arts Council.
It is well known that Kinnock is a strong supporter of the National, but although the chairmanship of the National is a prestigious role, it is unpaid.
Kinnock, who is currently vice-president of the EC and earns in excess of £130,000 per annum, was unavailable for comment over the weekend but a spokesman contacted by The Times confirmed Kinnock’s interest in the job. Details: www.nationaltheatre.org.uk
