Plans to convert the former headquarters of Fighter Command into a new Battle of Britain museum have been given the green light by Harrow Council.

The new museum will be created within the Grade II*-listed Bentley Priory, with a range of historic rooms at the World War Two base of the 'Few' opened up for the first time in 80 years. More than 100 new homes also form part of the plans, with City and Country selected to convert the priory into the museum and homes. Barratt Developments will build new homes on surrounding land.

The developers have committed around £9.5m for the creation and operation of the museum through an agreement with VSM Estates, which is working with the council and Defence Estates. Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust will operate the museum and have been involved with the scheme, which has been guided by a steering group led by the Prince's Regeneration Trust.

Harrow Council leader Bill Stephenson said: "We must never forget the courage and sacrifice of the RAF pilots and ground staff during the Battle of Britain. "That is why the council, the trust and developers have worked so hard to put a Battle of Britain Museum at the heart of the redevelopment. The future of the site is now secure and there will be a permanent reminder of Stanmore's place in British history."

Proceeds from the sale of land at Bentley Priory will go towards the Ministry of Defence's bid to upgrade working, living and communal facilities for servicemen at RAF Northolt.
