New Medieval gallery opens
The Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) in London has opened its Medieval and Renaissance Gallery, as part of a £120m project.
Spanning the east wing of the museum, the new gallery’s 10 exhibition spaces contain artefacts dating between 300 and 1600 and feature exhibitions including Medieval Monasteries, Gothic Architecture, Charlemagne and Aachen and Rudolph II & Prague.
Some of the objects include stained glass from Mairawald Abbey in Germany, an oak staircase from Morlaix, France, the Book of Trades (Das Standebuch) from Frankfurt and an edition of Aesop’s Fables published in 1485.
The gallery was designed by MUMA (McInnes, Usher, McKnight Architects) and was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The wider plans for the museum, named the FuturePlan project, were put into action in 2001, when the £30m British Galleries opened to the public.
The next phase of the project is the completion of the Ceramic Galleries, which is scheduled to open next year.
