New Museum of Wigan Life opens
A new museum has opened its doors to the public in Wigan, Greater Manchester, following the completion of a £1.9m scheme to revamp the town's former History Shop.
Manchester-based restoration company William Anelay was chosen to deliver the Museum of Wigan Life, which was designed by Bolton-based architects Bradshaw, Gass and Hope. The project, which secured £500,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), included external improvements, the refurbishment of the first floor local and family study area and a new entrance ramp.
A new Wigan exhibition, reception and shop have been created on the ground floor, while a purpose-built learning space and meeting room and an area for temporary exhibitions are also included. The Museum of Wigan Life project is also funding initiatives that will enable learning and outreach for heritage services, while around 5,000 images from Wigan and Leigh's history will be digitised.
HLF North West head Sara Hilton said: "The new museum has a key role to play in the cultural life of the borough, giving local people the chance to explore and contribute to Wigan's fascinating story. "The transformation and conservation of this landmark building will ensure that visitors will be able to enjoy and learn about the heritage of Wigan, both now and for many years to come."
