New PM reveals cabinet appointments
Prime Minister David Cameron has unveiled a number of ministerial appointments that will form the UK's new coalition government between the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties.
Among the new cabinet members is South West Surrey MP, Jeremy Hunt, who has become culture, Olympics, media and sport secretary, with responsibility for London 2012 being incorporated into the role after previously forming a separate brief. Hunt said: "Our sectors – particularly creative industries, culture and tourism – are vital elements in the UK's economic recovery.
"And the successful delivery of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London gives us a once-in-a-lifetime chance to showcase the country to the world in what will, quite literally, be the greatest show on Earth." Michael Gove has been chosen to lead the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), while Eric Pickles has been selected as secretary of state for communities and local government.
Liberal Democrat MP Vince Cable has been appointed as the new business secretary, with David Willetts named minister for universities and science. Caroline Spelman has been handed the position of secretary of state at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
Further cabinet positions are yet to be filled under the new coalition administration, which was formed after the Conservative Party failed to obtain an outright majority following the General Election. As part of the agreement between the Conservative and the Liberal Democrat parties, the administration has confirmed that it will not be pursuing plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
Additional runways at Stansted and Gatwick Airports have also been scrapped, while the Air Passenger Duty will be replaced with a new 'per flight duty' that targets airlines rather than passengers. The British Hospitality Association (BHA) has expressed its cautious optimism that the incoming government will take the tourism industry "more seriously" than the former administration.
A BHA spokesperson said: "The BHA is pleased that we have a government that can give stability for the country and has a clear view of the way forward, particularly in the areas of public expenditure, tax policies and interest rates." Jeremy Hunt's appointment to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has been welcomed by the chief executive of Arts Council England, Alan Davey.
Davey said: "In his role as shadow culture secretary he has been a knowledgeable and passionate advocate for the arts and a thoughtful supporter of the work of the Arts Council. "Speaking up for the arts within government is a vital role and his commitment and enthusiasm make him a great man for the job."
