New St Helens sculpture unveiled
A new 20m (65.6ft) landmark sculpture, designed by artist Jaume Plensa, has been unveiled on the site of a former coal mine in St Helens, Merseyside.
Located at the Sutton Manor Colliery, 'Dream' has been commissioned by ex-miners and St Helens Council as part of the Channel 4-led Big Art Project, which is supported by Arts Council England and The Art Fund. The Northwest Regional Development Agency, the European Regional Development Fund via the Merseyside Objective 1 Programme and the Forestry Commission have also backed the scheme, along with the St Helens Local Enterprise Growth Initiative and the Northwest Coalfield Communities Regeneration Programme.
Plensa said: "The site at Sutton Manor is a high point with amazing views all around, and I would like people to use the steps around the sculpture as a place to sit and enjoy looking at the landscape." According to the council, the sculpture – depicting a woman's head – was commissioned and designed to celebrate the area's mining heritage.
