New aquarium for Hong Kong's Ocean Park
Hong Kong's Ocean Park is launching a number of new attractions - including an egg-shaped aquarium - as part of plans to increase visitor numbers at the site by up to 15 per cent during 2010.
The new aquarium is due to open this month and has been designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry. It features nightly water shows composed by Peter Lehman and is part of a HK$5.5bn (£454.5m) redevelopment plan announced in 2005. Ocean Park chair Alan Zeman told local media that the Aqua City aquarium will have about 5,000 fish representing 400 species including sharks, tuna and devil fish in a 5.24m litre (1.15m gallon) tank.
Zeman added that Ocean Park - which received a record 5.4m paying visitors last year - also plans to boost revenue by opening a restaurant and shops at Aqua City.
