New arts complex to open in Neath

A new £2m arts centre at Neath Port Talbot College (NPTC) in South Wales will be officially opened next week.
Located at the college's Neath campus, the new facility includes a purpose-built theatre which will house a centre of excellence for performing arts students. The centre will be used by more than 500 students each year and also offers a 200-seat auditorium and stage with two rehearsal rooms, as well as a fly-tower for students to experience working with large scale set designs. The company behind the construction of the arts centre, which was designed by Port Talbot architect, James & Nicholas, was John Weaver Construction, based in Swansea. A £1.4m grant for the project was obtained through the Welsh Assembly Government's 16-19 Learning Pathways scheme. The Assembly minister for children, education, lifelong learning and skills, Jane Hutt, said: "This excellent new centre will help the students of Neath College develop their skills and talent. "The Assembly government recognises the importance of having facilities to encourage learners and to give them wider educational experiences through drama, dance and music." Hutt will join NTPC principal Mark Dacey, will officially open the new centre on 26 August.
