New bid to promote greener urban areas
A new partnership incorporating a range of organisations has been launched by the Forestry Commission in a bid to make towns and cities across Britain greener places to live and work.
Unveiled on 25 March at the ParkCity conference in London, the new Urban Regeneration and Greenspace Partnership (URGP) will involve government departments and agencies, as well as local authorities and environmental groups. Among the aims of the URGP is to promote the positive social, economic and environmental impact of greenspace in urban areas, as well as the creation of a network of research and evaluation sites and the distribution of best practice and case studies.
Tony Hutchings of the Forestry Commission's Forest Research agency, and co-ordinator of the URGP, said: "The use of greenspace in towns and cities is increasingly being seen as having a vital role to play in helping to regenerate them. "The URGP will play a vital role in raising the awareness, impacts and outcomes of urban greenspace. We look forward to working with a range of parties from all sectors to establish more urban greenspace and realise the benefits it offers."
