Maria Miller has said she is "delighted" to have been appointed to succeed Jeremy Hunt as culture secretary in the Prime Minister's cabinet reshuffle earlier today (4 September).

In addition to her new brief as secretary of state for culture, media and sport, Miller will also be responsible for the women and equalities portfolio within the government.

"I am delighted to have been appointed as culture secretary by the Prime Minister. I am very much looking forward to tackling the many challenges that the role will bring," said Miller.

Miller served on the Trade and Industry Select Committee after her election to Parliament in 2005 and has served as shadow minister for education, family welfare and the family.

After the coalition government came to power, Miller became parliamentary-under secretary for state at the Department for Work and Pensions before being named culture secretary.

Prior to her career as MP for Basingstoke, Miller was director at both Grey Advertising and Rowland Saatchi and worked in business development and marketing at Texaco.

• Miller has succeeded former culture secretary Jeremy Hunt, who was appointed to succeed Andrew Lansley as health secretary. Owen Paterson is the new environment secretary.

In one of the later appointments, Prime Minister David Cameron named LOCOG chief executive officer Paul Deighton as Treasury minister responsible for economic delivery.
