New face for Childhood museum
Next month sees the completion of phase one of redevelopment of the Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green.
The project is being developed architects Caruso St John with work taking place in three phases. Phase one, costing £2.2m, includes refurbishing the museum's central hall to improve circulation as well as the top floor exhibition space to allow for new interpretation techniques. Other works include repairs to the roof, a more accessible entrance and a new colour scheme.
Funding for phase one has come from the V&A (£1.1m), the European Regional Development Fund (£500,000), DCMS (£350,000) and the Single Regeneration Budget (£250,000).
Phase two will create a new entrance for the museum, more visitor facilities and new teaching rooms. The final phase will create a café and new temporary exhibitions spaces. Details: www.museumofchildhood.org.uk
