New heritage body for Scotland
The Scottish Government looks set to create a new organisation to manage the nation’s heritage.
The Historic Environment Scotland Bill is proposing the merger of Historic Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, to create a new organisation, Historic Environment Scotland.
The aim of the organisation would be to manage, protect and promote the historic environment, and focus on the cultural, social and economic benefits it can contribute to Scotland.
If the Bill is passed, the new organisation would be launched in April 2015 and powers would be transferred to it in October 2015.
“The strategy sets out a vision for everyone across the sector, building on existing strengths to unlock the true potential of our historic places,” says Culture Secretary, Fiona Hyslop. “Scotland’s heritage needs careful management based on a clear sense of direction, which is grounded in well-researched knowledge and expertise.”
