New home for Museum of Transport
Glasgow’s Museum of Transport will be re-homed in the proposed £50m Riverside Museum at Glasgow Harbour on completion in 2009, as part of the £800m regeneration of Glasgow Harbour.
The new facility will include educational areas for school and community groups and a study centre for enthusiasts and collectors.
The single-span design was created by architect Zaha Hadid to reflect the city’s maritime past, while Event Communications will carry out the exhibition design work.
The Glenlee Tall Ship – already restored with HLF funding – will be moored outside the Riverside Museum to tell the story of shipbuilding and industry on the rivers.
Cllr John Lynch, executive committee member for culture and leisure at Glasgow City Council, said: “This is a unique and iconic addition to Glasgow's outstanding cultural estate. I’m delighted that preparatory work is beginning on site and we look forward to the successful completion of yet another world-class attraction as we drive our museums into the 21st century.”
Manager Colin McLean said: “This project will allow the Museum of Transport to engage people in the past in even more interesting and dynamic ways. It will be a stunning tourist attraction and a beacon of contemporary heritage. The building itself will be a fabulous contribution to Glasgow’s riverside development.” Details: www.glasgow.gov.co.uk
