New lounge for London
A £300,000, cabaret-influenced venue has opened in London’s Hoxton Square.
The 300-capacity Underbelly is licensed until 1am and is a focused space that will be dedicated to showcasing edgy bands and DJs.
Designed by Paul Daly, the venue covers 2,260sq ft (210sq m) and is situated below the Zigfrid bar, which used to be artists Gary Hume’s and Sarah Lucas’ studio.
The venue also boasts a hand-painted ceiling, intended to evoke “childhood memories of pet dogs, guns and 70’s pornography” juxtaposed with jungle patterns.
As it is performance-specific, all concrete surfaces inside Underbelly have been treated for soundproofing and then clad with chestnut while a Nexo sound system completes the development. Details: www.underbellylondon.com
