New milestone for Aberdeen's Green THI
Work has been completed on a £2.8m streetscape renovation in Aberdeen, which forms part of the city's wider Green Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).
Launched in 2009, the five-year Green THI is a conservation-led programme that is designed to transform the city's historic Green and surrounding areas. Most of the funding for the streetscape upgrade was provided by Aberdeen City Council (ACC) and Scottish Enterprise, while the Green THI contributed a £525,000 grant.
Work included the restoration of pedestrian surfaces; the planting of trees and shrubs; and the installation of seating and lighting in a bid to enhance the setting of the area for residents and visitors. ACC's director of enterprise, planning and infrastructure, Gordon McIntosh, said: "The changes in the area are quite remarkable - it looks much cleaner, brighter and more inviting than it has done for years."
Green THI board chair John Stewart added: "The completion and official opening of the streetscape works is by no means the end of the Green THI." In addition to ACC and Scottish Enterprise, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland are also involved with the Green THI.
