A new plan aimed at restoring the lakes on Norfolk Broads has been developed by the Broads Authority.

The illustrated Lake Restoration Strategy has been designed to meet the government's Water Framework Directive targets by 2027.

The plans highlight the 64 broads with the greatest recovery potential, and the best returns for investment.

Trinity Broads at Ormesby, Filby and Rollesby, which offer sailing, rowing and guided canoe trails to the public, as well as Norton's Broad, are among the broads that will undergo restoration. The work will involve the pumping of mud to increase depth and remove nutrients over a two-year period. Following the work, Norton's Broad will also be opened up for guided canoe trails.

The Broads Authority has already been working on the restoration of the broads for the past twenty years. Head of Conservation, and author of the Broads Authority strategy, Andrea Kelly said: "It is a long-term project and there's still a lot more work to be done.

"The strategy helps us focus on lakes with the highest possibility of success," she added.

Funding from the scheme will come via a £1.3m national park grant from the government over the next three years. The strategy also underlines the need for an additional annual budget of £350,000 if the scheme is to achieve the Water Framework Directive targets over the next two decades.

The news follows a recent announcement of the 50-year Wetland Vision project aimed at creating, restoring and protecting areas of Wetland across England.

The Water Framework Directive, a piece of EU legislation, is designed to improve and integrate the way water bodies are managed throughout Europe.
