SkillsActive and the Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR) have announced that the national occupational standards for sports administration and governance have been approved.

The national occupational standards describe the key roles carried out in national governing bodies of sport and aims provide benchmarks of best practice for all those who work in the sector.

The approval of the national standards is the culmination of two years of work by a project group consisting of CCPR, Sport England, Sport Scotland, sports coach UK, UK Sport, Sporting Integrity, England and Wales Cricket Board and the Amateur Swimming Association.

Although there will not be an N/SVQ based on the standards, it is expected that both in-house and external training courses for the sports governance and administration workforce will map to and embed the new standards.

It is also hoped that the standards will help with the achievement of a higher level of professionalism in sports governance.

SkillsActive’s head of technical standards, John Thorpe, said: “Sport can not exist without good governance and administration and we are delighted to launch this new suite of standards which have been developed with CCPR and other partners.

“If sport is to meet key government targets on participation, produce medal winners and impact on key agendas such as health and social exclusion then it needs to be managed professionally, whether or not this is by paid workers or volunteers. We hope these standards will provide some support and recognition for this vital part of the sport and recreation workforce.”

Andrew Hanson, head of policy at the CCPR said: “ In a world where sport is increasingly high profile and where decisions are scrutinised ever more closely, the new standards can really make a difference. They will help observers see that sports governance is exemplary and ensure that decision-makers continue to develop the skills they need to keep the sector in good health.”
