New strategy to protect Derby World Heritage Site
A new £155,000 regeneration strategy led by Derby City Council (DCC) has been launched in a bid to preserve the long-term future of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in Belper, Derbyshire.
The Darley Abbey Regeneration Strategy, which includes the conservation of Grade II-listed buildings, also involves Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership, the European Regional Development Fund, East Midlands Development Agency and Derby City Partnership. Atkins, the international consultancy firm, has been appointed to undertake a study into methods to maximise the anticipated economic and tourism benefits of the World Heritage Site, which will include a conservation plan for all the site's buildings and plans for public art, signage and lighting.
Joe Naitta, DCC cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: "Everyone who knows the significance of Darley Abbey Mills should realise the potential they have to attract more visitors to the area which would undoubtedly invest more in the local economy. It's vital that we invest in preserving such an historical landmark for the whole city."
