New trust to run West Dunbartonshire facilities
A new leisure trust is to be created to operate facilities across West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, following the local authority's decision to back the proposals.
According to West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC), the plans would enable the non-profit organisation to save an estimated £615,000 a year in non-domestic rates. Three council-run leisure centres - Vale of Leven, Meadow Centre and Play Drome - will be operated by the trust, along with a series of community facilities.
WDC's active schools, sports development and outdoor education services will also be transferred to the trust, which it is anticipated will help drive up the standard of facilities across the region. William Hendrie, the council's convener for housing, environmental and economic development, said: "There is no suggestion that this is a form of privatisation as the council retains control and ownership of the assets, and as the main funder, will continue to have a major influence over policy."
WDC expects the creation of the trust to take around 18 months and will cost around £130,000.
